The Whitesell Brothers Quartet

The Whitesell Brothers Quartet presents original music inspired by beauty, joy and introspection.

Twin brothers Jake Whitesell (saxophone) and Sam Whitesell (piano) have been performing together for over two decades. The brothers grew up in Potsdam, NY, studying and performing music in several idioms, including classical, Celtic, jazz, and rock. In high school, they dug deeply into classic jazz recordings and formed a working jazz combo. The brothers furthered their studies in jazz and classical performance at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, graduating in 2005.

Jake Whitesell moved to central Vermont in 2010 and is now one Vermont's most in-demand freelance saxophonists and jazz musicians. He tours nationally with Kat Wright and performs regularly in Vermont with his own jazz groups and a variety of other artists and bands including Mal Maiz, Sabouyouma, George Petit, Ray Vega, and Paul Asbell. As lead alto saxophonist with Wally Siebel's All-Star Big Band in Potsdam, NY, Jake has backed up numerous jazz greats including Gary Smulyan, Ken Peplowski, John Pizzarelli, and Steve Wilson. Jake has also performed with The Temptations and The Dartmouth Gospel Choir.

Sam Whitesell moved to Burlington in 2016 after completing a Masters degree in piano performance and pedagogy at the Crane School of Music. For the past several years, he has maintained a busy schedule performing in a variety of styles, teaching privately, and composing. Sam performs regularly in the Burlington area with his own working jazz group and other musical collaborations.

The Whitesell brothers are supported by Vermont talents Robinson Morse (bass) and Geza Carr (drum set). Both perform regularly with Ray Vega, Taylor Haskins, and Shane Hardiman among others. Robinson Morse leads the Sound of Mind Medium Big Band and is a member of Vorcza.

The Whitesell Brothers Quartet has appeared at the Burlington Discover Jazz Festival annually since 2013. The group performed for a full house at the FlynnSpace during First Night Burlington 2018, and makes regular appearances at Jazz Wednesdays at Juniper in Burlington.
